国際ビジネスコミュニケーション協会主催「英語プレゼンワークショップ」に出場します！

3/2(日)、TOEICを実施している国際ビジネスコミュニケーション協会が主催する「英語プレゼンワークショップ」に出場することになりました！

先月、こちらのサイトで、500名の観覧者と5名のプレゼン挑戦者が募集されているのを見つけて、迷わずプレゼン挑戦者のほうに応募し、つい数日前に出場のご連絡を頂いたのです。

当日は、TED2013に唯一日本人として登壇したヨーヨーパフォーマーのBLACKさんによる講演会「心をつかむ！英語プレゼンの極意」、「英語プレゼンワークショップ」、BLACKさんによる英語プレゼン＆パフォーマンス「My journey to yo-yo mastery」があります。

英語プレゼンワークショップは、1人3分の英語スピーチをするのですが、NHKの番組「スーパープレゼンテーション」のプロデューサーおよび番組の英語監修者の方が、BLACKさんとともにアドバイスをしてくださるそうで、楽しみです！

残念ながら、もう観覧の募集は締め切ってしまっていますが、後でイベントの模様はサイトで公開されるようですので、また公開されたらご紹介しますね。

応募の際には、以下の2点が課題でした。

(1)今回、英語でのプレゼンに挑戦してみようと思った理由を英語でお書きください。
(2)3分間の英語プレゼンの概要を800～1000字程度の日本語でお書きください。

私が書いたのはこんな内容でした。

2 years ago, I wasn't confident making a presentation. I sometimes had to make presentations in front of more than 30 people including general managers of the company I was working for. Every time I made the presentation, I got nervous and wanted to run away from the conference room.

But now, I like to speak in front of the audience. I know how wonderful it is to make a good speech and deliver my message to the audience. I learned it through "recitation" practice in English.

I'd like to broaden the "recitation" practice in Japan. We rarely learn "recitation" in schools. I believe if we practice recitations in schools, a lot of young people could get the speaking skills earlier or more effectively.

If I get the chance to make a presentation this time, I'll make a recitation of Steve Jobs speech at Stanford University in 2005 a little bit, and then tell the audience how wonderful the recitation practice is.

テーマは、「recitation(朗唱)のススメ」です。

最初に、2005年のスティーブ・ジョブズのスタンフォード大学卒業式でのスピーチの暗唱を少しさせていただきます。その後、私自身がrecitationの練習をすることによって、どう変わったか、という体験談をお話させていただきます。

2年前まで、私は人前で話すことが大の苦手でした。仕事で時々数十人の前で話さなければならないことがありましたが、毎回、胃が痛くなって、手に汗をにぎりながら、やっとの思いでこなしていました。話す内容はある程度決まっていましたので、原稿を作って何度も練習したりもしていましたが、それでも当日は緊張して、会議室から逃げたくなるほどでした。

しかし、2年前、ある英語の学校に入って、有名なスピーチのrecitation（その学校では「朗唱」と呼んでいます）の練習を始めてから、それが変わり始めました。

recitationは、人のスピーチを自分のスピーチかのように、しっかり内容を理解したうえで、聴衆に伝えるものです。人の作ったスピーチではあるのですが、何度も何度も意味を考えながら口に出して練習しているうちに、自分の言葉かのように思えてきます。

2012年秋、私はrecitationのコンテストで200人くらいの前でスティーブ・ジョブズのスピーチのrecitationを披露し、優勝しました。ステージの上で、まったく緊張せず、聞いてくれている人たちに、しっかり内容を伝えることに集中して、話すことができました。

そして、それをきっかけに、私は「たくさんの人に何かを伝える」ということの面白さを感じ始めました。自分の言葉で、人の心を動かすことができる、ということの素晴らしさを知りました。

それを知ってからは、人のスピーチを暗唱するだけでなく、自分の言葉で話すことも好きになりました。英語でも日本語でも。

話すテクニックや英語力はまだまだ未熟ですが、「人前で話す」ことに対するマインドが変わったのです。今は英語の講師も始めて、セミナーも開催しています。人前で話すことが苦手だった2年前には、考えられなかったことです。

人前で話すことが苦手な人には、ぜひrecitationの練習を薦めたいと思います。大人になってからでも、人前で話すことに対するマインドを変えることができる、とても有効な手段です。

また、中学・高校などでrecitationを早めに始められたら、スピーチやプレゼンのスキルがつくと思うので、ぜひ学校教育でも取り入れてもらいたいと思います。

日本中にrecitationを広めて、人に何かを伝えられる人を増やしていきたいと思っています！

スピーチ原稿は「できるだけ暗記してください」ということになっていますが、もちろん暗記します！そして、もしど忘れしたら、その場の気持ちで話したいと思います。それは英語学校のスピーチで慣れているので、緊張しすぎなければ大丈夫だと思います。

This is the recitation of Steve Jobs speech and it changed my life.

Until 2 years ago, I hadn't been confident making a presentation or speaking in public. I sometimes had to make presentations in front of more than 30 people in the company I was working for. Every time I made the presentation, I got so nervous and wanted to run away from the conference room.

In the fall of 2011, I started to learn at an English school and to practice the recitation of Steve Jobs speech. Recitation is memorizing the speech and speaking it for an audience. Recitation is not only copying the speech. We need to understand the contents deeply and change it to our own speech.

Through the process of practicing recitation, I found that I was not doing the job I really loved and I needed to keep looking. Also, I got to know how enjoyable and wonderful it is to make a recitation and deliver my own message to the audience.

In October 2012, I won the first prize in the recitation contest in the school. And soon after that, I decided to leave the company I was working for and founded a new company. Now I’m an English coach and support English learners who stray just like I used to. In my seminars, I can express whatever I want to without being too nervous.

If I hadn’t practiced recitation, I wouldn’t have challenged this presentation workshop. If I hadn’t practiced Steve Jobs speech, I couldn’t have found the job I really love.

Recitation changed my job. Recitation changed myself. Recitation changed my life.

On behalf of Steve Jobs, let me give you the word I really love.

“Keep looking, don’t settle.”

当日をイメージすると、緊張感よりも「ワクワク」の方が大きいです。たぶん、500名の前で話したことはないので、自分がどのくらい緊張するのか、も含めて楽しみです。観覧に当たった方は、当日お会いしましょう〜☆

こんなに大きいイベントで一般人が出られるものは、なかなか珍しいと思いますが、小規模なものでも、人前での英語プレゼンやスピーチの機会を見つけて、チャレンジしてみると、本当に良い練習になると思います。みなさんもぜひ、そんな機会を探して、どんどんチャレンジしてみてくださいね！
